How a polymer additive is used varies depending on polymer and application. Appropriate use of polymer additives improve many characteristics such as durability, stiffness, clarity, weatherability, resulting in creating a product that has higher value. Antioxidants scavenge peroxy radicals and decompose hydroperoxides to prevent thermal degradation of polymers. Combined use of antioxidants and light stabilizers provides protection against photo degradation.
Phenolic antioxidants are radical scavengers that prevent thermal degradation of many organics and polymeric materials. They show synergistic effect when used in combination with phosphites, thioethers, and light stabilizers.
Phosphites are excellent peroxide decomposers, halogen acceptors, and masking agents. Phosphites give good heat stability, color stability, and process stability.
ADK STAB A-series is a blend type product contains phenolic antioxidants and phosphites. It can be used in a wide variety of applications.The ratio of phenolic antioxidants and phosphites can be tailored to meet specific requirements.
Thioethers are peroxide decomposers.Particularly, they show remarkable synergistic effect in combination with phenolic antioxidants.
UV Absorbers (UVA) / Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS)
There are two types of light stabilizers: Ultraviolet Absorbers (UVA) and Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers (HALS). The former converts light energy into harmless thermal energy. The another scavenge radicals generated through photo degradation.
UVA converts harmful ultraviolet sunlight into harmless thermal energy and exert outstanding effect in preventing photo degradation. Especially when used in combination with HALS, UVA exhibit synergistic effect, providing polymers with excellent weathering (light) resistance property.
HALS shows excellent UV protection performance by scavenging radicals generated through photo degradetion.
Nucleating Agent / Clarifying Agents
Nucleating agents and Clarifying agents enhance crystallization rate, result in improvement of mechanical properties, heat distortion temperature and transparency.
Additionally, they achieve energy saving through shortening of molding cycletime because of the improvement of crystallization temperature of the polymers.
Nucleating agents and clarifying agents give high degree of crystallinity to polymer resulting in enhanced mechanical properties such as stiffness, elasticity modulus, etc., and improve optical properties such as transparency.
Metal Deactivators / Additives for Filled Polymers
Metal Deactivators prevent degradation of polymers caused by metal catalysis residue etc.
Metal ions such as copper and iron act catalytically and accelerate the oxidation-induced degradation of polymers. Metal deactivators inactivate metal ions by forming complexes and prevent their catalytic reaction. Long-term thermal stability is significantly improved by adding metal deactivators to wire cable jacketing materials and other various industrial materials that are in contact with copper and iron.
Additives for filled polymers significantly improve thermal stability or processing stability when added to materials filled with inorganic fillers.
Plastics are used for various applications and therefore require all kinds of properties. Among them is the requirement for flame retardancy which is increasingly needed for plastics used for electronic applications and building materials. ADEKA's flame retardants are all halogen free, therefore have less impact on environment. Additionally, they cause less contamination problem due to their higher heat stability.
FP series give flame retardancy to plastics and make them applicable for electronic equipments parts or construction materials etc.
Epoxy Type Stabilizers / Processability Improvers / Lubricants / Water Dispersion Type Stabilizers
Epoxy type stabilizers impart thermal stability and color stability to polymers.
Processability improvers / Lubricants are added for the purpose of partial change of the original properties of plastics.
Processability improvers / Lubricants are added for the purpose of partial change of the original properties of plastics. In particular, processability improver / lubricants improve fluidity during high temperature melting processes and workability during molding processes.
Permanent Antistatic Agents
Permanent antistatic agents form a conductive pathway in the surface layer of base resins and dissipate the electric charges along the polymer backbone. As it is non-migratory, it provides an immediate long-lasting antistatic effect. Moreover, the effect is largely independent of relative humidity.
Permanent antistatic agents can be applied for anti-dust and ESD applications.
