The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (President and CEO : Kazuhiko Ishimura), ADEKA CORPORATION (President and Chief Executive Officer, Representative Director: Hidetaka Shirozume), Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. (President and CEO, Representative Director: Satoru Yamamoto) and Osaka Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology (President: Tetsuhiko Kobayashi) are pleased to announce that the founding convention of "Sulfur Utilization on Lithium-ion Battery Knowledge Exchange Network" has been held.

At the inaugural meeting, the chairman and executive committee members addressed the audience and explained the purpose of establishing this research group. The meeting was attended by 50 people from battery-related companies and research institutes, indicating the high expectations for sulfur-based batteries in next-generation rechargeable batteries.

The "Sulfur Utilization on Lithium-ion Battery Knowledge Exchange Network" plans to hold lectures and tours on a regular basis. We will contribute to the early commercialization of next-generation sulfur-based batteries in Japan and the achievement of the SDGs by providing "a place for open discussion and co-creation from the viewpoint of business creation" and stimulating research and development, which was the purpose of the establishment of the battery community.

About the "Sulfur Utilization on Lithium-ion Battery Knowledge Exchange Network"

Sulfur-based batteries are seen as one of the promising next-generation rechargeable batteries, and development is progressing with large-scale investments and pilot lines overseas. On the other hand, in Japan, although academic research is relatively active and several excellent sulfur-based active materials have been discovered in terms of material development, there are very few efforts toward social implementation.
Under these current circumstances, "Sulfur Utilization on Lithium-ion Battery Knowledge Exchange Network" was established to create a place for co-creation where companies can discuss openly from the perspective of business creation.
The institutions and companies participating in the battery community have been working toward the practical application of next-generation rechargeable batteries. The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) conducts research and development on the implementation of next-generation rechargeable batteries and their materials, including sulfur-based rechargeable batteries, in collaboration with industry, government, and academia. ADEKA CORPORATION and Sumitomo Rubber Industries, Ltd. are promoting the technological development of sulfur-based cathode active materials, which are key components of lithium-sulfur batteries. Osaka Research Institute of Industrial Science and Technology provides technical support in various industrial fields related to rechargeable batteries. We hope to accelerate the early commercialization of sulfur-based rechargeable batteries in Japan through collaboration with various organizations and companies.
We will promote the increase of players involved in sulfur-based batteries and promote efforts to ensure that sulfur-based batteries are implemented in a variety of settings, including energy storage systems, electric vehicles, next-generation drones/flying vehicles, and others thereby contributing to a sustainable society.
