The company and its co-researcher, Adeka Engineering & Construction Co., Ltd., were awarded this year's Japan Soda Industry Association (JSIA) Technology Prize for "Successful Development of the Technology and Equipment for Decomposition of Volatile Organic Chlorine Compound into Harmless Substances", more specifically, the development of technology to completely decompose such volatile organic chlorine compounds as trichloroethylene and tetrachloroethylene into carbon dioxide, hydrochloric acid and water by the photocatalytic action. The award was based on the evaluation of development of "Adeka Beam Clean HOTARU*", the equipment for photocatalytic decomposition by the application of the said technology, and also the development of plant system with the said equipment as a core for decontaminating the ground waters and soils polluted with volatile organic chlorine compounds.

This technology was adopted by the Environment Agency for the soil and ground water survey and its countermeasure survey through the demonstration tests of new technologies. The demonstration test of our HOTARU proved an excellent performance for decontaminating the polluted ground water in the demonstration test, and the technology was highly appreciated. As a result, around 50 units of the HOTARU are currently operating across Japan, contributing to the cleanup of environment. The performance of spreading the plant system was also evaluated in awarding the prize with us.

The award ceremony and the commemorative lecture were held on July 13 at the annual meeting of JSIA Technology/Maintenance Conference for the year 2000.

*HOTARU is a Japanese word for a lightning bug or firefly.
