FY2004 Environmental Action Goals and Achievements
Environmental conservation is promoted by defining quantitative goals for each important item. The FY2004 activities and results are indicated below
Action Plan |
Action Goal of FY2004 |
Activities and Results in FY2004 |
Evaluation |
Eradicate Occupational Accident |
- Zero occupational accidents
- Zero commutation accidents
- Zero serious accidents with the production facilities
|
- 3 occurrences of lost work-time injuries. 2 case increase over previous year
- 3 commutation accident occurrences. 2 case reduction over previous year
- No accidents on production facilities, thus, goal attained
|
|
Promote Energy Conservation |
1% improvement of energy consumption rate in annual percentage rate |
- Energy consumption increased 2%, energy consumption rate deteriorated 6% compared to previous FY. Increase of production requiring high energy input resulted in energy consumption increase.
- 3% improvement over FY1990 consumption level.
|
|
Reduce Greenhouse Gases Emission |
[Action Goal] By FY2010, 10% reduction of CO2 emission over FY1990 level. |
- CO2 emission increased 0.6 % over the previous FY emission level.
@Even though introduction of manufactured gas boiler contributed to CO2 emission reduction, overall emission increased slightly.
- 5% reduction over FY1990 emission level
|
|
Eliminate Industrial Waste |
- 1% reduction in annual rate of waste generation
- Promote zero emission*
|
- Waste generation increased 10% over the previous year. Waste disposal by commissioned subcontractors increased 16%. Recycling rate increased slightly over the previous FY, to 58.5.
- The final landfill quantity was 782t, 39% decrease over the previous FY.
Rate of final landfill was 5.1%, greatly improved from 8.8% of the previous FY.
- Kashima factory successfully achieved zero emission; final landfill rate was 1%. This was the second factory achieving zero emission. Sohma factory was the first to achieve zero emission at Asahi Denka Group.
|
|
Reduce Environmental Pollutant Discharge |
10% reduction of PRTR* substance discharge in annual rate |
- SOx*, NOx*, dust, COD*, BOD* were respectively controlled, at a self-management level beyond regulation level.
- The total discharge level of PRTR substances was 9 tons, 1 ton reduction over the previous FY. There are 57 PRTR legislation target substances.
|
|
Promote Green Procurement* |
75% green procurement rate |
- Green procurement rate of stationery was 70%, a 3% decrease over the previous FY.
Green procurement rate of non- stationery goods was 74%, a 5% increase over the previous FY.
|
|
Promote Management System |
- Make a master plan for IMS approval
- Continuous improvement of OHSAS18001 performance
- Continuous improvement of ISO14001 performance
|
- Sohma factory established IMS and obtained IMS certification
Kashima factory started preparation for IMS certification.
- Six Asahi Denka factories continued improvements for OHSAS18001
- Six Asahi Denka factories and two group company factories continued improvements for ISO14001.Kashima factory completed transfer investigation to revised standard of ISO14001.
- Five Asahi Denka factories and three group company factories completed review of ISO9001:2000 and continued improvements.

*zero emissionFAsahi Denka defines zero emission as gmaking the ratio of final landfill less than 1% of the waste disposal by commissioned subcontractors,h and is working towards its achievement. This definition is based on the idea gto achieve zero emission in the society as a whole by reusing and recycling waste generated in one industrial sector in another industrial sector,h promoted by the United Nations University.
*PRTR or Pollutant Release and Transfer RegisterF A system that gathers, sums up, and announces data on how much toxic chemical substances are released from where, and/ or that carried outside of the factory.
*Green ProcurementFPrioritizes purchase of environmentally sound products and services. Asahi Denka Group practices green procurement of printing services. Our CSR Report is also printed with soy ink and uses more than 30% FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified paper.
*SOxFSulfur Oxides are generated when burning fossil fuels. It accounts for acid rain and asthma. SOx changes into H2SO4 in the air and this is one of the causes of acid rain@
*NOxFNitrogen Oxides include NO and NO2 that are generated through high temperature combustion. NO2 is harmful for human respiratory system when concentrated. NOx contributes to photochemical smog and acid rain.@
*CODFChemical Oxygen Demand is the amount of oxygen necessary for oxidizer to decompose organic components of waste in water.
*BODFBiochemical Oxygen Demand is the amount of oxygen necessary for bacteria to decompose organic components of waste in water.
